Part Categories (Parts Settings)
Overview
Part Categories let you group and organize parts (example categories: Battery, Hardware, Lights, Tires). Categories are used throughout Parts and other related workflows—especially when creating or editing parts—so teams can filter, report, and keep inventories consistent.
Where to find Part Categories
Go to Settings
Select Parts
Click Part Categories
You’ll land on the Part Categories list.
Part Categories List
On the list page you can:
Search for a category using the search bar
Sort by column headers (ex: Name, Description)
Filter by Active using the Active filter
Each row represents a single category, with:
Name
Description
Active status (shown with a checkmark when active)
Add a Part Category
From the Part Categories list, click Add Part Category
In the Add New Category modal, enter:
Name (required)
Description (optional)
Click Save Category
After saving, the new category appears in the list and becomes available for use when creating/editing parts.
Edit a Part Category
From the list, open the category you want to change (by selecting the row)
In the Edit Category modal, you can update:
Name (required)
Description
Active toggle
Click Update Category
Activate vs Deactivate (Active toggle)
Use the Active toggle to control whether users can select the category going forward.
Typical behavior (recommended):
Active = ON: Category is available for selection in Part forms and anywhere else categories appear.
Active = OFF: Category is hidden from selection for new usage (helps prevent messy lists), while historical records can still display the category name.
If you plan to retire a category, deactivate it instead of renaming it (renaming can confuse historical reporting).
Tips & best practices
Keep category names short and consistent (singular vs plural, capitalization).
Avoid duplicates (ex: “Electrical” and “Electrics”).
Use Description for clarity when names are similar (ex: “Core” vs “Accessories”).
Troubleshooting
I can’t find my category in a dropdown: Confirm the category is Active.
We don’t want users picking the wrong category anymore: Deactivate the old one and create a clearer replacement.
